The Tartan Alpaca ® from Dark Sky Alpacas
Alpacas are part of the Camelid family and there are two types: Huacaya and Suri.
Making up only around 10% of the world's population of alpacas, Suri fleece has unique qualities. Compared to the more common Huacaya, whose fleece is also luxuriously soft, Suri has longer, smoother fibres which are reminiscent of silk and wonderfully lustrous.
Suri fleece is especially suited to making woven fabric which hangs with wonderful drape.
Our yarn is a blend of 72% Suri with 28% Huacaya as the Huacaya helps to bind the otherwise slippery threads of Suri and therefore adds strength.
Whilst Huacaya are sheared annually, Suri may be left in fleece for two years and they look absolutely stunning.
At Dark Sky Alpacas, we specialise in Suri but also keep some special Huacaya for use in our luxury products - and because we love them too! Their fleece is more 'fluffy' and grows perpendicular to their body - making them look soft and cuddly, like teddy bears.
